BJ came to the care center with a bite incident and history. Both incidents were similar in that the former owners reported that they would give BJ a command and he would react with snapping and ultimately biting. It is unknown the manner of which the commands were given to BJ that triggered his reaction. At the care center when asked to do a command softly, BJ usually does what is asked and takes treats gently in return. BJ's former owner reported that BJ would bare teeth, growl, and snap at both strangers and children, and that he was reactive to other dogs. At the care center, BJ shows extremely social behavior in the yard with known handlers, but barks, growls, and lunges at those same handlers while in the kennel. He shows similar behavior when interacting with unknown people through a fence. This behavior suggests that he has a degree of barrier frustration. We are recommending an adult-only, single-pet foster home with a New Hope partner that would be able to work with his reactivity using positive reinforcement, reward based training.

A staff member writes: BJ is a little meatball! This hungry hippo is only happy when you are presenting him with treats. He takes them ever so gently with his adorable underbite. Treats are the way to his heart and the perfect strategy to go from a stranger to a friend. He is a master at sit and down, and can even give paw. This older pup needs a new home so if you want to host this mushy faced boy at your house, ask about him at the Staten Island ACC!
