Kongs Foster Writes: Have you met Kong? A big, sweet boy, Kong is a middle aged gentleman- out of the hectic puppy phase, more into the long-walks-by-your-side phase! And boy, does he turn heads walking down the street. His rugged good looks and good leash manners earn him a lot of compliments from passers by, which he acknowledges with a calm and friendly lick of the hand. Where Kong really shines, though, is with children. Our morning walks take us past first by the high school (where he leans against the legs of the sophomores who scratch his head, and has nuzzles & face licks of those who crouch down to hug him), then by the middle school for more petting from the younger students (he licks the students hands and waits patiently while their baby siblings learn how to stroke a dog nicely). Back inside, Kong eats his breakfast & waits respectfully while his foster sister goes for her walk and has her breakfast. A total ladies man when it comes to other dogs, Kong wants to meet every female dog he sees, and will pass most male dogs politely if they give him space. He loves his foster sister, they share toys, mealtimes, and he follows her around and licks her face. Kong has just discovered toys, and he loves them! Stuffy toys, squeaky toys, chewy toys- they'll all his favorite. While we're at work he sleeps & hangs out, no chewing things he shouldn't and no potty accidents. He adores his dog walker and is excited for anyone to visit (the super, family, delivery guys, they all get a wagging tail and no barking). Kong rarely barks in the house, only if he's startled by a loud noise or hears another dog barking does he let out a single bark. He does sometimes roll around on his back and sing a little song while he tries to bite his feet, a goofy dance he does when he's happy and relaxed. Kong had been learning basic commands (like 'sit' and 'wait'), and is happy to take praise or treats as a reward! He is also working on stairs, which he is good at going up but not so great at walking down them gracefully. He does enjoy his treats, and also likes to snack on fruit- watermelon, pineapple, peaches. He mostly ignores our pet cockatiels even when they fly around, and he only occasionally chases squirrels. He loves to chase tennis balls, and we are learning 'fetch' which he's getting pretty good at. Mostly though, Kong just wants to spend quality time with his people from the time the alarm goes off in the morning (he wags his tail and peeks onto the bed to see who's awake) until late at night (when he lays by our feet as we watch TV, brush our teeth, and sleeps on his dog bed on the floor next to our bed). If you want an easy going companion with a whole lot of love to give, look no further than Kong.
