Ruger was surrendered to ACC due to behavior including reactivity to strangers (especially men), strength, and triggers such as items with wheels. The surrendering owner reportedly took him in from a situation that did not benefit Ruger and tried to work with him for a year. When they realized it was too much for them to handle, he was brought to SIACC. Ruger allows minimal handling and took weeks to be able to be taken safely from his kennel for a hands-on medical exam. In the kennel he lunges, bares teeth, and hard barks and is unable to be redirected with food. He only allows few female staff to handle him. We are recommending an adult-only foster home with a New Hope partner to ensure proper decompression and positive, force-free training to decrease his reactivity to strangers and any other triggers.

A staff member writes: Ruger is a big handsome boy who is a little confused at the moment. He looks like he wants to make some friends here at the care center but is still tucking himself away in his shell with most people. He was described by his former owner to be playful, excitable, fearful, and anxious. He needs a kind and patient friend to teach him that he is safe and how to enjoy being a dog. Ruger is extra nervous around strangers but once he gets to know you maybe he'll show off the tricks he knows. He was reported to know all kinds of commands like sit, down, paw, stay, and even give a kiss! We want Ruger to be able to feel comfortable enough to open up and be the good boy we know he can be! If you're interested in helping a handsome, confused boy to find his way, please ask about him at the Staten Island location!
