NYC Dog License

Is Your Dog a Real New Yorker?

Got a Dog? Get a License

It’s not just the law—a dog license is also a smart way to protect your pup. All dogs in New York City must have licenses, and the license must be attached to their collar while in public. Licenses are available for one to five years, with fees based on the license length and whether the dog is spayed or neutered.

Why Get a License?

FIND LOST DOGS

Dogs wearing license tags can be reported through the dog eLocator system. Lost dogs can also be reported or searched for through Animal Care Centers of NYC.

OFF-LEASH FUN

With proof of a current dog license and rabies vaccination, dogs can enjoy off-leash time at NYC park dog runs.

SIMPLIFY MEDICAL FOLLOW-UPS

If there is a bite incident, having a license simplifies and streamlines the process.

SUPPORT ANIMAL SHELTERS

Licensing fees help fund shelters and support free or low-cost spay and neuter programs.

ACC IS SUSPENDING INTAKE DUE TO CRITICAL CAPACITY ISSUES

ACC remains open for adoptions, drop-off of animals that require emergency medical care or that pose a public safety risk and those being dropped off by government agencies.
